8 things to check before you travel with an eSIM

Updated:2026-10-23

The most common eSIM problem isn't a faulty eSIM, it's a missed step. Spend five minutes before you leave going through these eight points.

1. Check your phone supports eSIM and isn't carrier-locked

Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, the phone usually has eSIM. Also make sure it isn't locked to a carrier; if it came on a monthly contract, ask your carrier whether it is unlocked. Some regional models don't support eSIM.

2. Make sure your email address is correct

The eSIM is sent to the email you enter at payment and is also shown on the confirmation page. We can't correct a mistyped address afterwards, so check it again before paying, and look in your spam folder.

3. Read when validity starts

Plans differ: some start counting on first data use, others when you install the eSIM or connect to a local network. An eSIM also usually has to be activated within a set time after purchase or it expires. Each plan's details say which, so read them before you buy.

4. Install on Wi-Fi

Installing an eSIM needs an internet connection, so do it on Wi-Fi at home or your hotel. Most plans start validity on first data use, so you can install early, but some start when you install. Check the plan details from step three.

5. Don't delete it after installing

A QR code can usually be installed only once. After installing, don't delete the eSIM from your phone settings until you've finished with it. A deleted eSIM can't be restored or reissued.

6. Set Mobile Data to the eSIM

In your phone's mobile service settings, choose the new eSIM for Mobile Data. Your regular SIM can still be used for calls and texts.

7. On arrival: turn on roaming for the eSIM and off for your regular SIM

The eSIM needs Data Roaming on to get online abroad. Turn Data Roaming off on your regular SIM to avoid roaming charges. Some Android phones may also need the APN entered manually, as the plan details describe.

8. Save the QR code and the order email

Screenshot the QR code on the confirmation page and keep our email. If you have no signal, work through "No signal" in the install guide, and if it still doesn't work, message us on WhatsApp with your order email and phone model.

If your destination may require identity registration, also read eSIMs and identity registration. When you're ready, pick a plan from the destination list.
