eSIMs and identity registration: what travellers should know

Updated:2026-10-23

Some countries and regions require users of mobile services to register with their real identity or complete verification under local policy. Knowing this before you buy an eSIM helps you avoid finding out on arrival that it doesn't work.

What is identity registration?

In short, you register with the carrier as the user of the SIM/eSIM, using a passport or other ID. Rules differ by place and can change at any time. In many places the requirement mainly targets SIMs/eSIMs that come with a local phone number and can make calls or send and receive SMS.

Does a travel eSIM always need registration?

Not necessarily. Most of our plans are data-only eSIMs with no phone number, and the supplier's information for these plans says "simply scan the QR code to use it, no other activation or registration steps needed". That is the supplier's information, though. Whether it applies in practice is still decided by local law, the local carrier and the supplier.

How do we show plans with special requirements?

If a particular plan has extra requirements, we list the supplier's notes in that plan's details, and under "Plan notes" in your email and on the confirmation page. For example:

What to do before you travel

  1. Read the details of the plan you choose and look for notes about registration or verification.
  2. Ask the destination's carrier or the plan's supplier whether a data-only eSIM needs registration there. Rules change, so go by the latest information.
  3. If registration is needed, have your passport ready and complete it yourself as instructed, before you go or on arrival.
  4. Keep your order email and eSIM details, as you may need them.

What can we help with?

We can help you understand plan details and with installation problems, but we cannot complete identity registration or verification for you, and we cannot control local rules. If the service doesn't work or is suspended because verification wasn't completed, that isn't grounds for a refund; see the refund policy. If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp before you buy.
