How to install an eSIM
A QR code can usually be installed only once. Install on Wi-Fi, and don't delete the eSIM afterwards.
iPhone
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and update to the latest iOS.
- Open Settings, go to Mobile Service (or Cellular), and tap Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the code on the confirmation page or in your email. If the QR code is on this same phone, use the one-tap install button on the page (iOS 17.4 or later).
- Give the eSIM a label, such as "Japan".
- Set Mobile Data to this eSIM. Turn off Data Roaming on your regular SIM to avoid roaming charges.
- When you arrive, turn on Data Roaming for this eSIM.
Android
- Connect your phone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, find SIMs or Mobile network, and choose Add eSIM or Download a SIM. Menu names vary by brand; on Samsung it's under Connections, SIM manager.
- Scan the QR code on the confirmation page or in your email.
- Turn the eSIM on and set Mobile data to this eSIM.
- When you arrive, turn on Data roaming for this eSIM.
- If the plan details say an APN is needed, enter it under this eSIM's Access Point Names. The APN is shown on the confirmation page when the supplier provides it.
If there's no signal
- Check the eSIM is turned on and selected for Mobile data.
- Check Data roaming is on for this eSIM.
- Toggle airplane mode, or restart the phone.
- Set network selection to automatic.
- Does the plan need a manual APN? See the plan details.
